"The weather board true to its name--I always think of the boatmen who had to endure this sort of winter, hands frozen to the tiller for 12 hours on and off up to Newark. Stood trying to stamp some feeling in their feet and getting a bit of heat from the cabin chimney. Of course that was in the good old days!"
