{"id":528,"date":"2013-07-04T09:14:22","date_gmt":"2013-07-04T09:14:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.newarkheritagebarge.com\/?page_id=528"},"modified":"2013-07-04T09:14:22","modified_gmt":"2013-07-04T09:14:22","slug":"spring-2013","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/www.newarkheritagebarge.com\/?page_id=528","title":{"rendered":"Spring 2013"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p align=\"center\">\n<p align=\"center\">\n<p align=\"center\">\n<p align=\"center\">Newsletter Spring 2013.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">At last a bit of sunshine to cheer us up and look forward to another season &#8211; apologies for the lateness of this but everything has come late this spring!<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.newarkheritagebarge.com\/?attachment_id=353\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-353\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"IMG_2977\" src=\"http:\/\/www.newarkheritagebarge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/IMG_2977-150x150.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>\u00a0The prolonged frost and snow is always a problem on the barge due to condensation and a lot of work has been done over the last three months to counteract this.\u00a0 \u00a0Using recycled wood, panels and insulation almost all the areas under the decks have been boarded over and it does feel warmer down below.\u00a0 \u00a0This work will protect the photo displays and give more space to use. \u00a0\u00a0It has been a full time job keeping the wood burner going to raise temperatures above freezing and log supplies have kept coming thanks to member Richard Bingham, chainsaw and van.<\/p>\n<p>The second half of January brought another problem with snow melt and heavy rain causing the river to flood up to the towpath so that wellingtons and ladders were needed to get on board.<\/p>\n<p>As mentioned in the last newsletter our Christmas tree in the Parish Church was enhanced by the bow model of Leicester Trader and admired by all &#8211; a real eye catcher and pictured in the local press.\u00a0 \u00a0The model was made by member Peter Smith who has since completed a further section with the fore hold, lifting hatches, for roller and mast. \u00a0\u00a0With this we can demonstrate cargo handling.<\/p>\n<p>Obituaries:<\/p>\n<p>It is with sadness I have to report that two good friends from the river have passed away.<\/p>\n<p>Just before Christmas Ron Warhurst died and I have lost yet another great font of river knowledge.<\/p>\n<p>He began in his youth on barges like Leicester Trader but moved ashore to take Newark Town lock in the mid 1950&#8217;s until retiring in 1986.\u00a0 \u00a0If he ever tired of my endless questions in my schooldays he never showed it.\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0I built two model barges, motor and towed , which we would sail in the lock. \u00a0\u00a0His funeral was well attended by family and former colleagues followed by many yarns in his favorite watering hole.<\/p>\n<p>Once we sort out all his photos we intend to have a Ron themed open day.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>In January, another friend of many years, barge Fusedale&#8217;s skipper Geoff \u00a0Wheat died unexpectedly. \u00a0\u00a0He had been recovering from prolonged cancer treatment and was expecting a good recovery. \u00a0\u00a0Unfortunately this was not to be. \u00a0\u00a0It must be remembered that without realizing it \u00a0at the time, Geoff was responsible for starting the project. \u00a0\u00a0He called me saying he was short of a mate and could I do a few gravel trips on Fusedale, \u00a0Collingham to Whitwood.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0Passing through \u00a0Knottingley he asked if I could identify a barge laid rusting at the old shipyard. \u00a0\u00a0It could have been one of three but it turned out to be Leicester Trader. \u00a0\u00a0Once I found out its significance it had to be the project barge.\u00a0 \u00a0When we bought LT , Geoff towed us first to Goole and then when the tides were right, up to Cromwell on our way up to Newark.<\/p>\n<p>Our new website<\/p>\n<p>Most of you will have seen our improved website which is the result of much hard work by committee member Duncan Nelson. Thanks also to member Ric Millen who kept it going when Peter Birley retired and moved away.<\/p>\n<p>Monthly open days<\/p>\n<p>Our monthly open days have started and the next one is Sunday 5th\u00a0May, 1200-1600. Please come and see us if you haven\u2019t been for a while.<\/p>\n<p><i>Future dates are\u00a0 2nd\u00a0June, 7th\u00a0July, and 4th\u00a0August<\/i>, all Sundays , same times.<\/p>\n<p><i>Saturday 14th\u00a0and Sunday 15th\u00a0September<\/i>\u00a0are our final open days to coincide with Heritage open days.<\/p>\n<p>Newark Festival\u00a0 weekend<\/p>\n<p>We are hoping to attend Newark Festival weekend\u00a0<i>Friday 14th\u00a0<\/i><i>, Saturday 15th\u00a0and Sunday 16th\u00a0June<\/i><\/p>\n<p>We have invited our local MP Patrick Mercer to visit Leicester Trader on the Friday afternoon.\u00a0\u00a0 As Leicester Trader is 60 years old this year we are using this date to celebrate its official birthday.<\/p>\n<p>The Transport &amp; Trade on the Trent\u00a0workshop on the\u00a0<i>18th\u00a0May<\/i>\u00a0is proving very popular so contact Philip Riden if you wish to attend.
