Waterways Heritage Day, Saturday 27 June 2015

Thanks to a further generous award by the Arts & Humanities Research
Council, under its Connected Communities Programme, to the
Department of History at The University of Nottingham, the University
and Newark Heritage Barge are pleased to present a Waterways
Heritage Day on Saturday 27 June 2015. This will showcase some of the
historical research and practical conservation currently in progress on
the rivers and canals of the East Midlands.
The day school forms part of the AHRC’s Connected Communities
Festival, a national programme of events intended to strengthen links
between universities and local communities.
After a series of talks in the morning, there will be a guided walk along
the river in the afternoon. This will mark the launch of Newark Heritage
Barge’s new ‘Trail’, intended to bring out for both local people and
visitors the rich waterside heritage of the town.
Alongside the talks and the walk, all the waterways heritage
organisations in the East Midlands and neighbouring regions are being
invited to bring along displays of their work and publications to sell, so
there will be an opportunity to see what is going on over a large area of
eastern England.
Anyone interested in waterways history, or the local history of Trentside
or canalside communities, is very welcome to come to this event, which
will be held at Staythorpe Electricity Sports & Social Club, King’s Road,
Newark NG24 1EW. The club is in the centre of Newark, within walking
distance of the bus station, both railway stations, and the main carparks.
There is limited waiting outside the club to unload display
material, but not longer-term parking.
There is no charge for the day school, but we do need to know how
many people are coming. Please see over for details of how to enrol.

All enquiries to: Philip Riden (email philip.riden@nottingham.ac.uk; or
telephone (evenings) 01246 554026.

It is important to register as soon as possible and further details on the event plus the registration form are available by following the link below, please click on the link and then click again to download the forms.

The New Hatch

Les’s newsletter (click here to access) mentioned that the repairs to the hull were being delayed through the weather conditions, but that has not stopped our Project Leader from working all available time he can on the barge. Les yesterday was creating a new lighter weight hatch cover for the foscsle access, as seen in these photos he’s making (as normal) a really good job of it! A reminder any help offered will be gratefully received, Les’s contact phone number is 07971 589 612 if you feel you can help in any way.

Season’s Greetings – A Christmas Tree Display

This Year’s Christmas Tree displays in the St Mary Magdalene Church in Newark town center are well worth the visit, especially to see our own tree so capably assembled by Margi. LTXMAS141Once again the Church has opened it’s facilities to all charities and organisations both business and pleasure, and a wander around will add to the Christmas spirit.LTXMAS146 Our own display centers around our activity this year, which has been the complete refurbishment of the hull, also referred to as “the bottom”. This is also a big  thank you to all the persons involved and of course our kind benefactors who have made this all possible to date. Our compliments of the season and best wishes for 2015, we look forward to a successful New Year with your continued support and a return to the water and our other “normal” activities!

Les, Hester and Margi

Les, Hester and Margi

At the well attended AGM held on 1st November 2014 we bid a sad farewell to Hester who has so capably led us as Chairman for the last three years. Hester’s commitment, dedication and motivation was acknowledged in the achievements we have made whilst Hester has been at the helm by project chairman Les Reid and all members of the Committee and Trustees. We welcome new Chairman Barry Thomson and look forward to a successful and happy association going forward. Herein a few photo momentos of Hester.
